Description

Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) remains one of the most critical and life-threatening obstetric emergencies, demanding timely intervention and coordinated clinical management. It is most commonly caused by uterine atony, although trauma, retained placental tissue, and coagulation disorders also contribute significantly. Effective management of PPH relies on early recognition, rapid resuscitation, and evidence-based therapeutic measures that combine medical, surgical, and supportive interventions. With advancements in obstetrics, tools such as uterotonics, tranexamic acid, balloon tamponade, and stepwise devascularization techniques have strengthened clinicians’ ability to control bleeding and preserve maternal health. Anesthesiologists play an essential role by ensuring hemodynamic stability, maintaining airway safety, and providing optimal anaesthetic support during emergency procedures. Modern protocols emphasize teamwork, structured response systems, and continuous monitoring to minimize maternal morbidity and mortality. Although significant progress has been made, PPH continues to challenge healthcare systems, especially in resource-limited settings, underscoring the need for preparedness, training, and access to life-saving interventions. Through a multidisciplinary and proactive approach, many complications can be prevented, ultimately improving outcomes and safeguarding maternal well-being.
