Some substances available in the nature are found to be harmful due to their natural properties. Their source may be either Sthavara (inanimates) or Jangama (animates). Visha dravyas (poisonous drugs) either Sthavara or Jangama are used in various Ayurvedic formulations. Ayurveda has described various types of Visha Dravyas which are of herbal, herbomineral or animal origin, but scattered information of these can be found in various texts of Ayurveda particularly Agadatantra. Visha has been described in terms of its Utpatti (origin), classification, Gunas (properties and pharmacological actions), its hazardous effects and management. Poisons are widespread in plants, and humans have tried to either get rid of them or convert them for their own advantage. This also means that they have been, and are, important sources of medicine. In the present work, an attempt has been made to understand the Visha Dravya, its history, types and properties in Ayurvedic parlance.
