Abstract

India is the world’s agricultural powerhouse also being largest producer of milk, pulses and spices and has the world’s largest cattle herd as well as the largest area under wheat, rice and cotton. So, if these get disturbed, it will be as disastrous as famine. Majority of people in the country lives in rural areas and depend on agricultural production as the main source of their income and food security. The study showed that agricultural production and marketing in India are affected by the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, in contrary this is the only sector that has shown a positive growth of 4 percent. However, the inimitable loss have occurred in many sectors all over the country. The study also revealed that the government of India has taken some measures to alleviate this situation and the agricultural extension has a key role to help farmers cope with the pandemic era. The impact of COVID-19 has drastically affected food security. The agricultural extension has a key role to help farmers cope with the pandemic era. An interdisciplinary team of medical professionals and extension personnels have to join their hand in creating awareness of the COVID-19, its approaches of transmission in the community and wellbeing measures. In this study, the role of agricultural extension during the pandemic era was presented in detail and the necessary suggestions during the pandemic era were presented. This paper was prepared to study the impact of COVID-19 on agricultural production and to study the role of agricultural extension to help farmers cope with the Covid-19 pandemic era. This study was descriptive and mainly based on secondary data. Hence, it is of high need to assess the immediate challenges due to COVID-19 on the Indian farm sector and suggest mitigation measures by agricultural extension system to provide a sustainable food system during, even in the post-crisis period.
