Women comprise more than half of the global population and one third of the labour force. Empowerment of women is essentially the process of edifying economic, social and political status of women. Majority of the Indian women reside in the rural areas. Contribution of the women in the rural economy is immense and large section is involved in the agricultural sector. Involvement of women in the Indian sericulture industry is more than fifty percent. Distinction of Indian women folks like maternal instincts, caring, loving, concentration, devotion and dedication is very much imperative for handling the delicate silkworm and other inter-related activities. Sericulture being a labour intensive cottage industry provides employment not only to the agriculturists but also to the landless labourers. People employed in other sector can take sericulture as a subsidiary income source. In India women have played crucial role in the development of silk industry from time immemorial. But it is unfortunate that the women in India are economically insecure as they don’t have the proper work in their hand. Thus it is possible to empower women through the development of sericulture industry. Technical and financial support to them will certainly lead to socio-economic development of rural sector through sericulture industry. The empowerment of the women and the development of the sericulture industry in India are interrelated.
