Community level seed-saving initiatives have been around for about 30 years. They have been designed and implemented to conserve, restore, revitalize, strengthen and improve local seed systems A community seed bank (CSB) is a local organization managed by the community to maintain, safeguard, and exchange local and farmer-preferred seeds. This paper explores the origins and evolution of CSBs globally and in India, steps for establishing CSBs, case studies demonstrating their impact, news related to CSBs, seed festivals, challenges faced during their establishment, and a model for their establishment. Data were collected from various sources, including key informants. The study outlines steps to establish a CSB, observed contributions in biodiversity conservation, challenges like one-time investment, short-term farmer involvement, and the necessity of improving and protecting rare crop varieties. The conclusion emphasizes educating and raising awareness among farmers, using mass media for information dissemination, providing training on PPVFRA, and securing financial support for CSB establishment.
