GST that came into implementation in India from 1st of July, 2017 is a comprehensive indirect tax which distresses the former concept of various taxes and replaces them with one single tax known as Goods and Services Tax. Aimed at bringing down the cascading tax structure of India's indirect tax system that had VAT, excise duty, and service tax among others, this unified tax system was successful in bridging both central and state governments. This paper specifically presents the scope and implementation of GST in India in terms of its evolution, features and policy and economic contexts. Further, approximate estimates on trends behind the growth of GST revenue, growth in the number of registered taxpayers and its effects on different sectors are also outlined in the paper. Similarly, sustaining efforts to realize economic development will equally focus on the challenges and opportunities for development of the economy, estimating the contribution of GST in facilitating Indian economic growth.
