Abstract

Coral reefs of Gulf of Mannar (GoM) often undergo acute disturbances which caused mass mortality of corals in GoM over the past few decades. Mass mortality of corals have altered the live coral cover in GoM and become the permanent resident of many local threats. During extensive underwater survey from October, 2018 to February, 2019, surprisingly many newly recruited and young scleractinian corals have been sighted at degraded reef area of Krusadai Island in Mandapam Group Islands of GoM. The overall live coral and dead coral coverage with density of newly grown young or juvenile corals have been measured by using Line Intercept Transect (LIT) and quadrat sampling method. Juvenile colonies of fast growing coral forms Acropora digitifera, Acropora muricata, Acropora gemmifera and Echinopora lamellosa were recorded at all study sites in Krusadai Island. Natural coral recruitment in Krusadai Island indicated that the degraded community of corals now started to regain their pre-disturbance habitat by increasing the live coral cover (56.58%) which may enhance the resilience potential of the GoM reef.
