Fishes are the rich source of protein essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. The fat and fatty acids especially omega 3 fatty acids are highly beneficial and difficult to obtain from other food sources in many developing countries fish is the cheapest source of animal protein. Measurements of morphometric and meristic counts are considered as authentic and easiest methods for specimen identification Hence an attempt has been made to study the morphometric and meristic characters of available fish along the Nagapattinam coast classify the fishes based on the above mentioned and find out the abundancy of the type fish available. The study revealed that totally 10 variety of fishes namely Oligopilites saurus, Sardinella longiceps, Elops sarurus, Terapon jarbua, Pesudocaranx georgianus, Thryssa malabarica, Kanangurta rastrellier, Curngoids malabaricus, Panna heterolepis, and Lutjanus campechanus.
