Abstract

Pollination, the transfer of pollen to the stigma of flowers, is the most important process in the continuity of plant life. Even though there are several agents that aids in pollination, insects are the most efficient pollinators as they are easy to manipulate. Among insects, honey bees are the most prominent pollinators because they collect pollen from different flowers on a regular basis which supplements the protein source required in their diet which in turn makes them visit infinite flowers in a day thereby cross-pollinating a wide variety of plants. Realizing the fatal effect of conventional agricultural practices on mankind and the environment, there has been a gradual shift from conventional to organic farming practices in which no chemical inputs are used. At present, higher demand for organic products by customers has also been noticed. Organic farming supports stability of pollinators by improving pollinator habitat, providing more diverse and nutritious forage options, and reducing the use of synthetic pesticides that are toxic to pollinators.
