Abstract

The concept of HDP of horticultural crops has gained momentum as a result of the ongoing decline in the proportion of arable land available, rising energy and land prices, and increased demand for horticultural produce. It is the novel concept of accommodation of maximum number of plants per unit area to reduce the gestation period, increase productivity, get maximum return per unit tree volume and improve fruit quality without imparting the plant and soil fertility. HDP system was first pioneered in Europe for apple in the early sixties. The fundamental tenet of HDP is to maximise return per unit of inputs and natural resources while making the optimum use of horizontal and vertical space per unit of time.HDP is currently in vogue. During the last four decades, the importance of HDP for higher productivity of fruit crops has been realized. Now it has become one of the most successful tools of the Hi – Tech horticulture. It ensures efficient use of land, water, nutrients and solar radiation with higher productivity. The gestation period can be shortened most quickly with HDP system.
