Ostrich plume is another name for red ginger (Alpinia purpurata), which is actually a member of the Zingiberaceae family. It is a popular cut flower cultivated in tropics and sub tropics. Due to its lengthy, gorgeous red flower bracts and rich green foliage, it is frequently used as a cut flower and as a landscape adornment. It is a potential crop to be exploited in tropics as the flowers are year-round and have outstanding post-harvest characteristics. In the perennial cropping system, red ginger cultivation helps the farmers to earn additional income and also serve as an alternative livelihood opportunity as the demand for flowers exists throughout the year.
