Any plant which bears a foreign gene of desired function of other organism is called transgenic plant and these plants commonly referred to as genetically modified (GM) plants. The use of recombinant DNA technology emerged as a powerful tool to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur naturally in the species. Crops developed by transgenes can not only be used to enhance yields and nutritional quality but also for increased tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stresses. Although there have been some expressions of concern about biosafety and health hazards associated with genetically modified (GM) crops, there is no reason to hesitate in consuming GM food crops that have been thoughtfully developed and carefully tested.
