Broccoli, scientifically known as Brassica oleracea L. var italica Plenck, is a popular winter vegetable belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Its morphology is like that of cauliflower, except for the secondary heads that form in the axils of its leaves. Broccoli is part of the 'Cole Crop' group, which also includes cabbage, cauliflower, kale and mustard. The term "cole" crops comes from the Latin word caulis, meaning plant stem or stalk. Although cole crops are biennials, they are usually grown as annuals. Indigenous to the Mediterranean area, broccoli is a cultivar of wild cabbage. With its high nutritional value and versatility in cooking, broccoli has become a popular ingredient in many cuisines worldwide.
