Abstract

Cut flowers, such as lilium, are becoming more and more important in the Indian floriculture market these days due to the rising standard of living and the preference of people for new and exotic flowers. Large and eye-catching flowers are the primary reasons, lilies have gained commercial significance in recent days. Lilium is large class of bulbous, leafy-stemmed perennial ornamental crop having varied range of flower colours along with robust long-lasting flower stalks. Currently, lilium has commercial market for fresh cut flowers, potted plants, and garden plants. It is one of the top ten cut flowers holding a significant position in the global floral market and also lilium makes a substantial contribution to the global decorative sector. In India, there is great scope for the commercial cultivation and marketing of cut flowers since the Indian flower market for high-yielding flowers like liliums, anthuriums, and orchids, has grown in recent years. There is an increasing demand for exotic cut flowers as well. Lilium is one among those non-traditional cut flowers crops which yields the highest income per unit area when compared to other flower crops which makes lilium cultivation both profitable and productive. Hence, we are seeing lilium with every day rising demand in India these days. In response to this rising demand, lilium cultivation needs to be diversified in non-traditional areas. Furthermore, cultivating lilium is best suited with temperate climate and was once limited to the temperate zone, but the protected cultivation technology has made the lilium flower production successful in non-traditional areas with improved yield and quality.
