Abstract

Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybridus Hort.) is an important cut flower crop. It is ideal for both garden display as well as floral arrangements. It is also commonly used for table and interior decoration by making high quality bouquet. Its availability in the market is mostly concentrated during the winter season and it is popular in the international markets. Production of gladiolus is largely influenced by planting time, corm size, varieties, fertigation and mulching etc. Good number of spikes, florets per spike and corm multiplication ability are the main characters to be considered for gladiolus improvement. However, Production and supply of gladiolus flower in summer or rainy summer is very limited due to adverse weather conditions and the productivity and quality of the crop, are constrained by lack of knowledge on improved production technology. Based on this presumption, the chapter provides a comprehensive review on various aspects including open cultivation, greenhouse production, fertigation, forcing technique, propagation methods, intercultural practices, advanced packaging, and storage facilities. This review also serves as a valuable resource for growers seeking to optimize gladiolus production in regions with limited resources.
