Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally with more than one million adults overweight and at least 300 million of them are clinically obese. Traditionally using spices are used as part of food and as medicines. Aim is to explore the bioactive components from commonly using traditional spices could potentially have anti-obesity effects. The anti-obesity effect of the cataloged commonly using spices Foeniculum vulgare, Garcinia cambogia, Cinnamomum cassia (L), Myristica fragrans Houtt., Cymbopogon citratus (DC), Piper nigrum L, Murraya Koenigii, Zingiber officinale, Allium sativum, Curcuma longa, and Allium cepa L were reported. Bioactive compound is a compound, which has the capability and the ability to interact with one or more component(s) of the living tissue by presenting a wide range of probable effects. Anti-obesity bioactive from plants are considering a source of bioactive compounds including dietary fiber and organic micronutrients such as carotenoids, polyphenols, tocopherols, vitamin C, and others. These natural compounds constitute an interesting alternative to current pharmacological anti-obesity therapeutics, which are often associated with unwanted side effects. Further studies aimed at the identification of bioactive compounds from traditional spices with potential anti-obesity effects are poised to contribute to the development of therapeutics to be used in the prevention and/or treatment of obesity.
