Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is an annual herbaceous plant native to southern Mexico and Guatemala. The seeds of chia play a vital role as ingredients in the Food & Beverage, Cosmetics and Pharmacological industries due to their high nutritive and medicinal properties. The higher accumulation of dietary fibers, fatty acids (omega-3 acids), and different phytochemicals impart high nutritional value to the seeds. They also have a usage in folk medicine. The therapeutic properties of chia seed or oils include high antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, it has also shown cardioprotective, antidiabetic, anti-osteoporotic, anxiolytic, neuroprotective, anti-estrogenic/ estrogenic, analgesic, and anti-allergic activities. Compared to other cereal crops, it has higher protein content, hence possessing a massive potential to prevent and correct protein-energy malnutrition in human health. This review is an attempt to provide a detailed nutritive and pharmaceutical viewpoint of Salvia hispanica seed.
