Abstract

In India, different forms of traditional medicine like Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani were practiced for therapeutic purposes to cure various illness. The herbal and plant-based therapies and their efficacies were documented in the Vedic literatures and this valuable knowledge had been transferred as words orally across generations. About 45,000 plant species have been explored and identified with medicinal values. The review discussed the healers of ancient medicine, herbal remedies derived from Dietary supplements, traditional forms of medicine, their principles and the various forms of alternative medicine such as magnetic therapy, mud therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal therapy, meditation, naturopathy practiced in ancient times for various ailments. Since, allopathic medicine had reduced life span of a person to a greater extent, the people have increased the thoughts of shifting their minds to Indian’s ancient form of medicine. Indian System of Medicine though slow acting cures the disease with minimal side effects.
