Abstract

Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng., a perennial medicinal herb belonging to the family Lamiaceae, has been extensively used in traditional, ayurvedic, siddha and folklore medicines for the treatment of various ailments. The herb has therapeutic as well as nutritional properties due to the presence of various phytochemical compounds which are highly valued in the pharmaceutical industry. The herb has been used in medicinal as well as culinary preparations. Plectranthus amboinicus has been used in the herbal medicines or folk medicines to treat conditions such as cold, asthma, constipation, malarial fever, hepatopathy, renal and vesical calculi, headache, cough, fever, bronchitis and skin diseases. The leaves of the plant are used as flavoring agents, or incorporated as ingredients in the preparation of food. This study deals with the pharmacognostical evaluation of Plectranthus amboinicus by using different parameters which include the morpho-anatomical studies, physicochemical properties, phytochemical analysis and histochemical analysis to set the quality control parameters for the raw material.
