Abstract

The tea plant, Camellia sinensis, has transformed beyond its conventional role as a beverage to emerge as a herbal solution, blending a rich history with contemporary scientific validation. This in-depth exploration integrates insights from pharmacology, chemical compositions, and historical narratives to unravel the multifaceted nature of C. sinensis. The presence of flavonoids and polyphenols, key bioactive elements, imparts a unique flavor to the plant and potentially offers health benefits. Scientific investigations highlight its diverse properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer attributes, with a specific focus on tea polyphenols like epigallocatechin gallate. Acknowledged by traditional medical systems as a promoter of holistic health, C. sinensis is explored in this chapter for its therapeutic aspects. These encompass cardiovascular benefits, anti-inflammatory effects, anticancer potential, antioxidant activity, antidiabetic qualities, anticaries properties, and neuroprotective effects. Numerous studies underscore the plant's ability to mitigate inflammation, oxidative stress, and support cardiovascular and metabolic health. Additionally, research suggests its potential in preventing neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. The plant's hepatoprotective properties are also scrutinized, showcasing its ability to counteract liver damage induced by medications. In conclusion, this chapter presents a concise yet thorough examination of C. sinensis as a herbal remedy, seamlessly integrating traditional, scientific, and historical perspectives. The wide array of therapeutic properties discussed hints at its potential transformation from a simple tea beverage to a comprehensive remedy.
