Abstract

Geranium (Pelargonium spp.) is a multipurpose plant renowned for its ornamental and aromatic properties. Cultivated primarily for its essential oils, geranium thrives in well-drained soils and requires a sunny, temperate climate. Cultivation practices involve regular watering and moderate fertilization to promote robust growth and oil production. Geranium is commonly propagated through stem cuttings, which ensures genetic consistency and plant health. The distillation of geranium involves steam extraction of its leaves and stems, yielding an essential oil that is highly valued in the fragrance and cosmetic industries. The distillation process is carefully controlled to maintain the quality and potency of the oil, which contains key components like geraniol, citronellol, and linalool, contributing to its distinctive scent and therapeutic properties. The uses of geranium oil are diverse, ranging from its application in aromatherapy for stress relief and mood enhancement, to its incorporation into skin care products for its purported anti-inflammatory and astringent effects. Additionally, geranium oil finds application in the flavoring of foods and beverages, and as a natural insect repellent. The combination of its aesthetic appeal, economic value, and therapeutic benefits underscores the significance of geranium in both commercial and domestic settings.
