Abstract

Potato has emerged as fourth most important food crop in India and is the third most consumed crop that contributes to global food security. In order to find out the adoption pattern of different varieties by the potato grower a study was conducted at Sivasagar district of Assam. The study showed that farmers grow high yielding variety like Kufri jyoti, Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Sinduri and local variety Badami aloo, horu aloo etc. The farmers of Sivasagar are habituated to plant crop within 15th November. A result revealed that if planting delayed beyond November, all the cultivar grown in the district reduce the record of tuber yield (Kufri jyoti, Kufri pukhraj, Kufri Himalini, Kufri Sinduri) etc. Climate change is another factor and that may insidiously hampers rural incomes and food security in Assam including Sivasagar distict by longer spells of water shortages and increased incidence of pest and diseases. Study suggested that Kufri Pukhraj was found to the most demanding potato in Sivasagar district. Almost 80% of the Potato growers of Sivasagar districts used Kufri pukhraj. It yield almost 18.7 to 20 t/ha and B:C ratio was around 3:5. The demand of potato is growing day by day and every household plate is completed with a portion of potato. The improved growing technologies led to a successful potato cultivation and also food security for future.
