Anther culture is a method of tissue culture in which a part of the plant in this case anther give rise to a haploid plant when provided with a suitable nutrient media and other optimal conditions. This technique has been applied successfully in the plants of various families like Solanaceae, Cruciferae, Gramineae, Ranunculaceae etc. The plant which have gametophytic chromosome number in their sporophytic life cycle is called haploids. Production of haploids by the process of anther culture is known as androgenesis. In nature haploid production is a very rare event which occurs mainly by parthenogenesis but artificially it can be achieved by hormone treatment, radiations, delayed pollination and various others. But invitro anther culture method is most efficient among them. Haploid production has a very significant role in the field of plant breeding mainly for the development of isogenic lines, hybrid seed production, cytogenic research etc.
