Abstract

Building envelopes are primarily the functional medium between the external environment and internal conditions of the built fabric and influences the occupant thermal comfort and energy expenditure of the built environment. Most of our built environment is characterized by ‘static’ building envelopes that rarely adapt to changing external conditions. With increasing uncertainties of weather events and sudden changes in the environment, it is the need of the hour to design dynamic climate adaptive building envelopes that can adapt to changing conditions and function to the various performance indices of the building. Due to the constantly changing environmental conditions along with rigid and static building envelopes that don’t adapt to these changes, most of our built environment is dependent on unsustainable mechanical system of services for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning. The incorporation of climate adaptive building envelopes could prove to be a step towards efficient energy consumption and provide thermal comfort and occupant satisfaction. This chapter explores the importance of climate adaptive building envelopes concerning building performance to adapt to constant changes in the environment.
