Abstract

Green roof infrastructure is expected to grow in importance over the next few decades. Sustainable approach to mitigate bad effects of urbanization has already been presented in the form of green roof concept. Green roofs can be a really useful concept for urban dwellers in the 21st century. This book chapter talks about history of roof, its types and various components as well as the benefits of using this green roof technology. It also talks about the potential of green roofs through several case studies. The benefits of green roofs show their importance in guaranteeing city safety, sustainability, and climate change resilience. As a result, several governments reward those who build green roofs. Green roofs are an investment that brings major social, environmental, and economic advantages to both the public and private sectors. It extends the life of the roof membrane, insulates sound, and can be used to create various sorts of amenity space for the building's residents. The main disadvantages of using green roofs are the expensive initial construction costs, high maintenance costs, and roof leakage difficulties. These challenges can be overcome by creating a breakthrough low-cost green roof design that works well in any area. The book chapter also addresses the research obstacles and gaps of the green roof concept.
