Abstract

There were several acts/orders for delivery of safe and hygiene food to the consumers which created legal difficulties to the Food Business Operator. Indian government came up with “Food Safety and Standard Authority of India” under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in 2011 as an autonomous body which eliminated all other orders related to food for human health. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSSAI is responsible for providing science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. This chapter describes the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 and different regulations led by Food Safety and Standard Authority of India.
