Diabetes captains the non-communicable diseases among people of middle aged groups from high and middle income countries. The upsurge in individual spending capacity and augmented exposure to mouth-watering, easily available ready to eat foods, found to be high in empty calories and saturated fats, have led to multifarious rise in the prevalence of diabetes. Diabetes is also the root cause of many micro and macro vascular complications if left untreated or uncontrolled. Life style changes and balanced nutrition with foods from all five food groups are considered as the prime contributors to keep diabetes at bay. Diet occupies a major space in the diabetes management. A diet low in calories and fat, i.e. The macronutrients role in blood sugar maintenance has been highlighted throughout, while the function of micronutrients left unnoticed. Micronutrients is evolving as the catchword of today’s health realm. The major source of micronutrients being Fruits and Vegetables, Rightly, 2021 is marked as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables by the Food and Agriculture Organisation, to highlight the pivotal role of fruits and vegetables in human nutrition, food security, to improve sustainable production and reduce waste. This review aims to summarize the relationship between micronutrients, namely vitamins and minerals and diabetes and its effectiveness in quality living.
