Abstract

Dietary fiber, which is a vital component in plant-based foods, is important for preventing and promoting overall health. It is often divided into two forms that are soluble and insoluble, each of which has unique advantages. Fruits, cereals, and legumes are rich sources of soluble fiber, which when come in contact with water forms a gel-like substance that lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Constipation can be avoided and regular bowel movements encouraged by the addition of bulk to the stool provided by insoluble fiber, which can be found in vegetables, whole grains like wheat, roasted bengalgram, peas, etc. Furthermore, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory qualities, are produced with the assistance of dietary fiber. Fiber also aids in weight management by enhancing satiety and reducing overall calorie intake. Furthermore, it plays a protective role against cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Epidemiological studies and clinical trials consistently show that high-fiber diets are linked to reduced risks of these conditions. The potential therapeutic applications of dietary fiber in managing gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and diverticulitis, are also being explored. In conclusion, incorporating adequate dietary fiber into daily diets is crucial for long-term health and well-being.
