Global population by 2050 is projected to increase by 50% from now, i.e. from 7.4 to 9.2 billion, while population increase in India is expected from 1.3 to 1.8 Bn. Consequently, global grain demand is projected to nearly double because of a projected 2.4-fold increase in per capita real income, causing dietary shifts towards a higher proportion of meat much of which is grain-fed Considering food needs of livestock and poultry, the food requirement would further increase. India would require around 350 MT of food grains during 2050, while the food-grain production currently is revolving around 260 Mt. Doubling food productions and sustaining it that too without compromising with environmental quality and public health, is a greater challenge today.
