Healthy soils are the foundation of the food system. Our soils are the basis for agriculture and the medium in which nearly all food – producing plants grow. But unfortunately soil ecosystem is being destroyed due to the introduction of harmful objects, chemicals or substances, directly and indirectly to the soil by humans. Soil pollutants include a large variety of contaminants or chemicals (organic or inorganic), which could be both naturally occurring in soil and man-made, acid rain etc. An unhealthy or polluted soil not only lowers the quality of crop but also affects human health, contaminates water sources and negatively impacts the ecosystem and biodiversity. There are various indicators such as visual, chemical, biological and key indicators which help to spot the polluted or degraded soil. The best way is soil prevention/management, but to handle the soil which is already polluted, soil remediation also comes out as efficient process.
