Abstract

Agriculture continues to be backbone for livelihood of more than 50 per cent of the population of India and contributes about 17 per cent of the GDP (Anonymous 2017). The population is increasing day-by-day but there is very limited scope in enhancing cultivable area. Therefore, more productivity per unit area is essential. Plant nutrients supplementation has been considered essential to meet the nutritional requirements. Nutrient supplement has a direct relationship with food production along with a number of supporting factors like improved varieties and hybrids, irrigation, access to farm finance, enhanced total factors of productivity, etc. it has been established that nearly 50 to 60% of the increased food production during 1960-77 could be due to fertilizers. The consequences of green revolution pulled India out of the stage of being a ‘Begging Bowl’ and transformed it to a country of ‘overflowing granaries’ but deteriorated natural soil resources. Imbalanced application of fertilizers is a common problem in almost all the regions of India and the agricultural soils have started witnessing multi-nutrients deficiencies. The poor information on soil nutrient requirements, price variation among subsidized fertilizers and easy availability of few fertilizers are some of the main reasons escalating nutrient imbalances. Moreover, intensive cropping with high yielding crop varieties and lack of recycling of yard manure (FYM) and composts have aggravated the situation.
