Abstract

It is the human activities that has lead to imbalance the global nitrogen (N) cycle by causing imbalance in the amount of reactive N in the biosphere. The natural N inputs to terrestrial systems has been surpassed by anthropogenic inputs of industrially produced N fertilizers and N fixation in biosphere.Inspite of all these,N use efficiency of our fertilizers in agricultural systems continues to be as low as 50% or less. Management of nitrification can be effectively done by limiting ammonium substrate availability and promotion of nitrifiers directly. Using nitrification inhibitors in combination with synthetic or biological nitrication inhibitors is another very effective measure that can be widely practiced.
