Globally, micronutrient deficiencies are very common and affect more than half the population. Consumption of food containing nutrients less than the daily requirement of essential nutrients and energy is the cause of malnourishment among people. Malnutrition is more common in developing and underdeveloped countries and people living below the poverty line are most vulnerable. Children and women are most affected by micronutrient deficiencies. Every year Indian GDP loses around $12 billion due to mineral and vitamin deficiency. Supplements such as pills, powders and commercial fortifications are not a permanent means of fighting malnutrition in the long run. Biofortification is the only cost-effective and sustainable strategy to work together with ecosystems that can tackle malnutrition in one go. Biofortification is the process of improving the amount and bioavailability of nutrients in a staple food that is readily available to everyone on the planet, poor or rich. The government is paying heavy attention to the development and cultivation of biofortified crops.
