Environmental degradation is the major problem in recent times. Rapid use of chemical fertilizers after the era of green revolution is causing the degradation of soil fertility, lowering agriculture productivity as well as contaminating water bodies, air also which ultimately creates hindrance for the sustainable livelihoods. Sustainable- Ecological practices can change the adverse productivity of farming and also create environmental protection. In this context vermicompost play a important role that is produced through the decomposition of organic waste materials by earthworms. This organic fertilizer not only help plants growth, yield but also increases the nutritional value of the crop’s. Use of vermicompost improves the soil structure, water holding capacity, plant available nutrient concentration, organic matter content as well as reduces the vulnerability of soil against erosion. As vermicompost eco-friendly and economically viable, it helps maintaining environmental sustainability and promoting agriculture sector towards greener future. In this study, we have discussed about importance and future prospects of vermicompost along with focusing on it’s (vermicompost) role in organic farming.
