Abstract

Jatropha is a versatile plant that belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. It has numerous characteristics and a lot of potential. The plant produces a lot of useful goods, particularly the seed, from which oil can be extracted and used as a feedstock for biodiesel production. The extracted oil can also be used for making soap, glue, dye, etc. The leaves, shoot latex, roots, and seed oil have medicinal properties. After oil extraction, the crushed seed cake provides a high-protein source with certain toxic and anti-nutritional components. The main toxins found in the seed cake are phorbol esters and trypsin inhibitors, which can cause a variety of health issues if consumed. The use of oil cakes against economically important nematode issues like Meloidogyne spp. has received a lot of attention. Oil and aqueous extracts from oil have insecticidal properties. It's been used to manage insect pests of cotton, such as cotton bollworm, as well as pests of legumes, potatoes, and corn. Among the recently developed biotechnological processes related to the exploitation of Jatropha are the genetic improvement of the plant, biological pest control, enzyme-supported oil extraction, anaerobic fermentation of the press cake, and the isolation of anti-inflammatory substances and wound-healing enzymes. The present chapter concluded that oil cakes are the best option so far against phytoparasitic nematodes not only because of their ease of availability but also economical feasibility for the growers/farmers' entrepreneurship.
