In Hyderabad, India and the adjacent suburban areas, a survey on veterinary medicine use and residues in milk was conducted. The most common ailment was mastitis, and oxytocin and oxytetracycline were commonly utilised in veterinary formulations. In a study of 205 milk samples, oxytetracycline residues were found in 9% of market samples and 73% of individual animal milk samples. There were no oxytetracycline traces in any of the government dairy tests. Milk consumption of oxytetracycline was calculated to be 0.045 mg/kg bw/day. Market milk samples had amounts ranging from 0.2 to 1.4 g/ml, whereas samples taken from individual buffaloes had values ranging from 0.2 to 6.7 g/ml. It was discovered that oxytetracycline residues have an effect on curd setting, with the amount of residue affecting the amount of curd set.
