Abstract

Body Mass Index (BMI) refers to the measurement of weight and height of a person which is scientifically calculated by using the formula weight/height2 of a person. Body Mass Index plays a vital role in indicating and giving an alarm about the health condition of a person. Higher the Body Mass Index is considered as obesity and lower in Body Mass Index denotes underweight. Both cases are considered as unhealthy and it may lead to some health complications. Poor Body Mass Index is caused mainly due to unhealthy diet and lack of physical exercise. This research paper focuses on the Body Mass Index of college going women students who are studying in rural colleges. The objectives of the study is to know about the Body Mass Index of the students, their food habits and their knowledge about the nutritional values in foods they consume on regular basis. The study was conducted among 120 students by using convenience sampling method. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Adolphe Quetelet Body Mass Index calculation was used to calculate the Body Mass Index of the respondents. The findings state that, most of the respondents are underweight, their knowledge on nutritional value of foods are very poor and skipping breakfast. The study comes up with the suggestion of conducting awareness programs on food and nutrition among women students of rural college to sensitize the importance of healthy eating.
