Abstract

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The role of Science and Technology is crucial at all levels local to global. Scientific knowledge and appropriate technologies are central to resolving the economic, social and environmental problems that makes current development path unsustainable. Development is possible to some extent on industrialization and industrialization is possible because of Science and Technology. As a result environmental degradation is in an alarming rate and it results in various environmental issues such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, green house effects, raise in sea water level, improper monsoon and acid rain. In order to achieve the acceptable level of global environmental sustainability the citizen must be empowered with essential knowledge and information, environmental education represents a relevant means of prevention because this type of education encourages learner’s awareness of their environments ambient conditions, as well as their active participation in solving the local problems. Environmental Education also develops moral philosophy, social values which are regarded as very important issues for sustainable developments. The Departments of Education has also the greater responsibility in this regard. Including environmental subjects in the curriculum from elementary to higher level can create environmental awareness among the citizen of a country.
