Abstract

Sepsis should be defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. The scope of this chapter is recognition and early management of serious illness in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period up to 6 weeks, and its management. The speed and appropriateness of therapy administered in the initial hours after severe sepsis influences outcome and improves survival rates.
