Abstract

Social isolation is a serious health issue that can lead to loneliness, impacting mental health. Through an interdisciplinary lens, it delves into the psychological, physiological and behavioral implications of social isolation. Social isolation has a high prevalence and will affect a person's health and well-being as the number of elderly people rises. The chapter examines the impact on mental health, including increased risk of depression and anxiety. The findings indicate that there is a dearth of data revealing a variety of detrimental health consequences and potential risk factors associated with social isolation. Despite having unique access to severely socially isolated, homebound older adults, there is little indication that public health experts are measuring social isolation in older people1. Furthermore, it discusses the role of social support networks and community engagement in mitigating the adverse effects of social isolation. The chapter concludes by highlighting the importance of developing strategies to address social isolation for the betterment of overall health and well-being.
