Abstract

India's elderly population is predicted to double to 20.8 per cent by 2050, with the number reaching 36 per cent by the end of the century due to the advancement of health care and education. Specifically in five states, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Haryana, where the total population of the elderly people is ten percent or more. On the contrary, loneliness is considered a big problem for the individual where elderly feel lonely even after being in their fullest family. Loneliness has been described as subjective, unwelcome feeling of lack or loss of companionship. Adverse effects on health from loneliness are seen at every stage of the lifecycle but the elderly are at particular risk both for loneliness and the health consequences of loneliness. Increasing evidence that loneliness and social isolation directly affects the health outcomes and strategies that can be implemented. From social and physical activities many types of interventions have been done to overcome loneliness. Retirement, grief, lack of friends, poor physical health etc. are the major issues of the elderly which cause the stress, over thinking, sleeping disorder, health issues, depression etc. It is suggested to adopt the meditation, worshiping god, engaging in physical exercises, taking a rest or going on a vacation to overcome the loneliness.
