Entirely new types of plants and animals can be created by altering their genetic structures through the new technology of genetic engineering. This advanced biotechnology enables us to create plants and animals with the characteristics we want by cutting, joining and transferring genes between unrelated species genes from insects, animals and humans are added to crop plants to create unique qualities that we have never seen in the original plants. Genetic engineers and their proponents call the biotechnology a "miracle of science," saying the genetically modified foods can contribute to the reduction of hunger in the world and to transforming agriculture into a value added industry. Genetic engineering is certainly a field that will continue to provide new challenges and opportunities to us in the next century. Hopefully, genetically engineered foods may contribute to reducing world hunger. But to make our dream come true researchers should continue their efferts to prove that they can create truly safe and useful.
