Abstract

The pharmaceutical packaging sector is under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices due to the environmental impact of traditional plastics. This chapter explores the urgent need for eco-friendly packaging alternatives, evaluating how conventional materials contribute harm to the environment. The chapter reviews different packaging types and their protective roles. It focuses on advancements in sustainable solutions, particularly bio-based and biodegradable options like bio-polymeric films made from natural polymers such as proteins and polysaccharides. The analysis includes industry trends, regulatory actions like plastic bans in India, and the integration of intelligent packaging technologies. Findings indicate that biodegradable materials, including starch-based and cellulose derivatives, provide substantial environmental advantages over conventional materials. Additionally, innovations such as Radio Frequency Identification tags and temperature indicators enhance both the safety and efficiency of packaging. This chapter highlights the critical need for sustainable practices to improve environmental outcomes and advance packaging standards in the pharmaceutical industry.
