Abstract

The intricate relationship between Kannada novels and movies has been a subject of fascination for scholars, creatives, and enthusiasts alike. This research article delves into the interplay between these two mediums of storytelling, examining how novels have influenced the world of cinema and how movies have adapted literary works to the silver screen. By analyzing the creative process, narrative techniques, and audience reception, this article uncovers the multifaceted connections that exist between novels and movies. The connection between novels and movies is indeed true, much like the underlying foundation of literature that flows like an underground river. Just as literature serves as the core inspiration for the construction of films, it is the literary essence that provides the impetus for the creation of cinematic art. While literature forms the vital life force for various processes, movies also require literature as the fundamental inspiration for storytelling, individual creative expression, and diverse narrative styles. In the creation of literature, it is the author's imagination that takes center stage. The author becomes the wellspring of ideas, creating a solid foundation from their own inspiration. Their imagination shapes the story, and their artistic ability paints a vivid picture in various styles. Novels, stories, and literary works are the playground of a writer, and therein lies their unique domain. However, a writer may hesitate or resist the idea of transforming their work into a film if it deviates from their original intent or opens the door to possibilities contrary to their initial concept. Yet, the medium of cinema itself offers such possibilities. It has its own distinct framework that shapes the form. As Gangadhar Gadgil once said, 'In the world of cinema, literature is often perceived only as literature. However, the best cinema emerges from the principles already established. The one who writes a song for a film is often called a poet, designating the song as an excellent poem.' Yes, conversations about cinematic literature often refer to it as excellent literature. Even though one may receive accolades for contributions to films, they may not necessarily be revered as literary giants in the literary world.
