Abstract

Globalisation has created wide opportunities to international agricultural and other allied trade, movement of seeds and planting material. India is making imports of plants and plant materials. This resulted in the introduction of numerous invasive insect pests, ornamental plants, weeds species to India which not only have devastated several agricultural crops but also have caused huge monetary loss. The recent invasion of Fall Armyworm during 2018 into India by the international trade became menace for maize growing farmers. Implementing IPPC International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISMPs) can help countries reduce the risk of exotic insect pests introduction in their territories. Hence, management of the invasive insects became highly challenging task. Minimising the loss caused by invasive insects requires a strict legislation laws and integration among countries with respect to exchange of information about the invasive species and their natural enemies. And a strict Plant Quarantine regulatory measures at the Domestic Quarantine as well as Foreign Quarantine, can reduce the entry of exotic pests. Effective implementation of quarantine is highly needed for management of invasive alien pests, which in turn helps in maintaining the productivity of crops.
