Insect host plant selection is frequently separated into two categories: "host plant finding" and "host plant acceptance". Understanding the behavioural and physiological processes involved in selecting a host plant can be utilized to collect information about insects that can be used in better management of various insect pests. These processes comprise the sequential nature of host selection behaviour, the effect of experience and time-dependent changes in host acceptance or rejection. Behavioural components include; attraction towards the host, maternal care, ovipositional behaviour etc., while the physiological components include the digestibility, nutritional requirement etc. of the pests.
