In India, agriculture contributes nearly one quarter of the crop and majority of the population is dependent on farm activities. The land holding per farmer in India is very insufficient compared to the other parts of the globe. According to the National Sample Survey conducted in 2003, 60.4 percent of the rural households were engaged in farming activity which indicates that nearly 89 million people are farmers, in which 60 million are holding less than 1 hectare of land. Our country is the second most populous country in the world. With the increasing population, the cultivable land resource is shrinking day to day. To meet the food, fiber, fuel, fodder and other needs of the growing population, the productivity of agricultural land and soil health needs to be improved. The gravity of environmental degradation resulting from faulty agricultural practices has caused alarm among the concerned farmers and scientists that sustainable farming systems have become a necessity for saving our environment.
