Abstract

The escalating issue of soil salinity, a consequence of climate change and anthropogenic activities, poses a significant threat to global agricultural productivity, affecting approximately 7% of the Earth’s land surface. In India, where agriculture is central to the economy, challenges such as water scarcity, soil degradation, and weather-related risks further compound the predicament faced by farmers. Soil salinity, exacerbated by sub-optimal irrigation practices and climate shifts, emerges as a critical hurdle, hindering sustainable crop production. This review explores the potential of inter- cropping, a sustainable agricultural practice involving the simultaneous cultivation of multiple crops, to address soil salinity issues in the Indian context. Specifically, the integration of halophytes-plants adapted to saline conditions-into intercropping systems is investigated as a novel strategy to fortify agricultural resilience. This chapter provides an overview of intercropping principles, emphasizing their significance in Indian agriculture, and synthesizes existing knowledge to offer insights into the current state and future prospects of intercropping practices in India. The aim is to contribute valuable insights that inform sustainable agricultural practices, fostering resilience and productivity amidst evolving environmental challenges.
