Abstract

Organic seed production is a system that enhances agroecosystem health by promoting biodiversity cycles and soil biological activity. The aim is to produce high-quality, nutritious food while minimising ecological damage from agrochemicals. The production of organic seed excludes synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, GMOs and techniques such as radiation or sewage sludge. Essential steps include converting land to organic management, ensuring environmental sustainability and employing natural pest and weed control methods. The most important is organic certification, which involves different steps and adhering to strict standards. The benefits include environmental protection, improved soil health, energy efficiency, carbon sequestration and reduced water pollution. Challenges like low initial productivity, the need for skilled management, a time-consuming process and higher costs. Despite these challenges, organic seed production supports sustainable agriculture by maintaining a continuous cycle of organic cultivation.
