Since centuries plant extracts and herbs have been used in traditional medicines as cure for various ailments. Momordica charantia commonly referred to as karela, bitter gourd, balsam pear and bitter melon is significantly used in cooking and alternative medicine due to its antidiabetic, antiviral, antitumor properties and antihyperglycemic and cholesterol lowering effects. It is widely used amongst population of Asia, South America, East Africa due to its curative properties. Among various disorders, diabetes mellitus is one of the most commonly occurring endocrine disorder in developed and developing countries. Approximately one third of diabetic patients rely on traditional or conventional medicine i.e., antidiabetic herbal plants which essentially includes use of Momordica charantia considering its antidiabetic property. Present studies primarily aim at highlighting the therapeutic effect of karela against diabetes and other disorders along with its phytochemical and pharmacological effect for better designed clinical trials to explicit its medicinal properties.
